What is SDG 6?
SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda. It aims to ensure that everyone, everywhere has safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, and the means to practice good hygiene, and it covers water quality, water-use efficiency, and the protection of water-related ecosystems.
What do clean water charities do?
Clean water charities work on getting safe water and dignified sanitation to people who lack them. Typical work includes:
- Drilling and maintaining wells and boreholes in rural communities
- Building toilets and sanitation infrastructure in homes, schools, and clinics
- Hygiene education (WASH: water, sanitation, and hygiene programs)
- Water purification and safe household water storage
- Protecting springs, watersheds, and other water sources
- Emergency water supply after disasters
How to check a water charity before you give
The same rules apply to water charities as to any other: confirm the organization is registered, read its integrity assessment (it measures disclosure, not impact), look at its filings, and check who runs it. Every organization listed here has a profile with exactly that. The five-step walkthrough is in our guide for donors.
