What is SDG 8?
SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda. It aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all, and it covers job creation, fair working conditions, entrepreneurship, and the elimination of forced labor and exploitation.
What do job training charities do?
Job training charities work on helping people find, keep, and grow in decent work. Typical work includes:
- Vocational training and job placement programs for unemployed and underemployed people
- Apprenticeships and skills courses for young people entering the workforce
- Supporting entrepreneurship and small businesses with training and microloans
- Promoting fair labor practices and safe working conditions
- Anti-trafficking work: prevention, victim support, and survivor reintegration
- Helping people excluded from the labor market, such as those with disabilities or criminal records, into employment
Workforce development nonprofits sit alongside anti-trafficking organizations under this goal because both advance the same aim: work that is freely chosen, fairly paid, and safe.
How to check a job training charity before you give
The same rules apply to job training charities as to any other: confirm the organization is registered, read its integrity assessment (it measures disclosure, not impact), look at its filings, and check who runs it. Every organization listed here has a profile with exactly that. The five-step walkthrough is in our guide for donors.
